The last few weeks have been… hot. And while I myself am switching between the fan and a shady spot with my third iced coffee of the day, I look at Matilda and Gustav – and ask myself: What really makes them feel good right now?

Because one thing is clear: summer heat affects our dogs even more than us. They don't sweat like we do, they wear their fur at 30 degrees just like at 10 – and they rely entirely on us when it comes to getting through the warm days.

Morning is our time.

Gustav is an early riser – and that's very convenient for us in the summer. We often do our first round when it's just starting to get light outside. The air is fresh, the ground cool, the birds awake – Matilda trots comfortably beside me, Gustav flits through the tall grass. The world is ours. After that, we go back into the shade.

During the day, we avoid the sun as much as possible. And I also let go of perfectionism sometimes. Instead of action, our summer is all about: slowing down, resting, just doing nothing.

Paws under scrutiny

What I myself underestimated for a long time: how hot asphalt actually gets. That's why I test the ground with the back of my hand before every walk. If it's unpleasant for me, then Matilda and Gustav will simply stay for a game in the garden or a trip to the stream. The main thing is paw-friendly.

Water is our best friend.

On particularly hot days, our water bowl becomes a constant source of refreshment. In addition, Matilda and Gustav enjoy a damp towel on their favorite spot or a quick shower with lukewarm water. And yes – we also have ice cream. Homemade from yogurt, berries, or even a piece of watermelon – preferably frozen on our "Ruhige Hilde" ( a brand of ice cream). The lick mat is in use almost daily in summer and not only provides cooling, but also a little relaxation. A real summer must-have for our two furry friends.

Just let it be.

Sometimes I notice Gustav still overestimating himself – full of playful energy, even though the sun is already blazing. Then I gently remind him to take a breath. Matilda sets an example anyway: She retreats, finds a cool spot on the tiles and enjoys the peace and quiet. I also try to adopt this rhythm – to be less about having to do, and more about being.

Our summer conclusion?
It's not about making everything perfect. It's about being mindful. Paying attention, sensing what our dogs need – and letting go of plans sometimes.

Because sometimes a quiet day in the shade, a little water, a slow walk in the evening – that's all we really need.

Stay cool,
Jelena with Matilda & Gustav
